Sad Story

Wendy Scott, a Munchausen patient well-known throughout the U.K. for her notorious history of factitious hospitalizations, actually recovered and went on to actively support other sufferers.  But when she developed intestinal cancer, nobody would work-up her symptoms.  A year went by before an ally psychiatrist in the U.S. believed her and finally made the diagnosis (at age 50).  See NY Times Obituary.
