Deep Throat Infection (causing pharyngitis)

Life-threatening, invariably febrile, and obvious:
  • Epiglottitis — drooling, can’t open mouth, maybe stridor.  DON’T Examine Throat.  CALL 911
  • Retropharyngeal Abscess — drooling, can’t open mouth
  • Ludwig’s Angina — floor of mouth swollen, tongue forced upward
  • Lemierre Syndrome (jugular thrombophlebitis) — respiratory distress, unilateral neck swelling

Call 911 / Rush to E.D.
