Lead Poisoning (as cause of anemia)

Anemia only if also toxic enough to be symptomatic:
  • Constitutional: malaise, fatigue
  • Abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation
  • Arthralgias, myalgias
  • Cognitive disturbances
  • Lead Levels >70
If a patient is at epidemiologic risk, draw a lead level.  Risks include:
  • Occupational:  paint, batteries, solder, ammunition, ceramics, radiators, cables/wires
  • Exotics:  Hispanic & Asian folk remedies, amulets, toys
  • Moonshine, adulterated marijuana
  • Pica (eating dirt)
