Celiac Disease

Malabsorption triggered by gluten from wheat, barley, rye, maybe oats
  • Prevalence ~1:300 / 1:500
  • Occurs in many ethnicities (not just white Europeans)
Test any patient with Chronic Diarrhea or unexplained Iron Deficiency:
  • anti-Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibody
  • anti-Endomysial IgA Antibody
  • If negative, rule out IgA deficiency, or test IgG antibodies
  • Small bowel biopsy if serology positive
  • Tests must be done on gluten-rich diet
