Stroke with Facial Palsy

Basilar artery ischemia / infarction affect CN7

Rarely (if ever) CN7 alone.  Usually other symptoms / signs:
  • Diplopia, dysarthria, dysphagia, hoarseness
  • Abnormal EOMs;  CN 9, 10, 12;  Motor & Coordination deficits
Facial Weakness patterns  —  Stroke vs. Bell’s
  • Eyebrows & forehead maintain normal strength with Stroke; are Weak with Bell’s
  • Stroke:  maybe dissociation between voluntary & spontaneous facial movement
