Temporal-Mandibular Joint Syndrome (“TMJ”)

Commonly diagnosed as a cause of ear pain, BUT

• No good pathologic or clinical gold standard
• Probably better to say “Atypical Facial Pain, Ear”

BEWARE of over-diagnosis

• Suspect if unilat. masseter or temporal muscles tender to palpation

Don’t refer to dentist unless oral disease noted

Many treatments available (i.e. no single good therapy)
