Dix-Hallpike Test (for Vertigo)

Diagnostic of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV):

1.  Rotate the patient’s head 45° to the right.
2.  Abruptly lay them back, head extended off the table
3.  Observe the eyes for nystagmus (may take 30 secs.)
4.  If no response, repeat on the other side.
The test is 80% sensitive for BPPV.  If negative, since BPPV is so common & presents so uniquely, treat anyway with the Epley Maneuver.
