Liver Disease as cause of Macrocytosis (MCV >100 fL)

Any chronic liver disease might cause macrocytosis.

• Mechanism unknown

Always order LFTs when you see a high MCV

• MCV usually not extremely high (<110)
• Often no frank anemia
• If ↑ LFTs, work them up (see posting Chronic Hepatitis)
