Anemia of Chronic Disease (ACD)

Mild Anemia, rarely below Hb 10 gm / Hct 30%

• Usually Normocytic (MCV 80-100)
• If microcytic, MCV 75-80

Decreased bone marrow production; many causes:

acute inflammation or infection medication effect old age etc. etc.

renal / liver failure malignancy collagen-vascular disease etc. etc.

Key Test:  Reticulocyte Count ≤1%

Usually don’t order extensive W/U for cause:

• Consider ESR
• Consider Rheum referral if ESR ≥100 mm.
